Posted By Alexander Pan, Aspen Institute, Saturday, August 15, 2015
Updated: Thursday, September 26, 2013
The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a global network of organizations that provide critical financing and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) in the developing world. ANDE members believe that support for SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, produce environmental and social benefits, and ultimately help lift developing countries out of poverty. We also believe that in order to thrive, SGBs need an entire ecosystem that promotes their growth. This series of stories from the SGB sector highlights the power of collaboration among ecosystem actors. To read the full article please click here

Root Capital: Applying a Gender Lens to Agriculture Farmers, Leaders, and Hidden Influencers in the Rural Economy

Posted By Administration, Saturday, August 15, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

In this issue brief, the second in Root Capital’s Issue Brief Series, we share our experience of applying a gender lens to our work in smallholder agricultural finance. Through our Women in Agriculture Initiative, we have been able to better understand the areas in which we know we support women (as farmers, agro-processing employees, and leaders). This work has also identified new areas for potential impact that further foster economic empowerment for women, underscoring the vital nature of women in less conspicuous — but high-impact — roles and positions. We call these protagonists “hidden influencers,” and in agriculture they include midlevel managers at agricultural businesses, agronomists, leaders of farmer networks, and agrodealers. While much of the discussion to date among impact investors and development practitioners has been focused on the two ends of the spectrum – women as leaders and women at the base of the economic pyramid – we have seen that women in the middle play critical roles. We seek to expand the dialogue in impact investing and international development to document, celebrate, and support these hidden influencers.

Private Capital for Social Outcomes: Identifying More Opportunities for Impact Investment in International Development

Posted By Administration, Saturday, August 15, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

The International Development Working Group is one of four thematic Working Groups of the independent Social Impact Investment Taskforce established in June 2013 under the UK’s presidency of the G8. The International Development Working Group, composed of experts in international development and finance, was created to inform the Taskforce on the role of impact investment in international development, and contribute to the Taskforce’s objectives of reporting on and helping to catalyze the development of a global social impact investment market.

The International Development Working Group brought together development practitioners and investors to explore the ways in which the changing landscape of development is creating new opportunities for effective partnerships to drive improvement in social outcomes. The Working Group assessed how impact investment can help to further drive economic development and improvement on social issues in developing countries. Working Group members agree that there is an opportunity for impact investment, in conjunction with public, private and philanthropic capital, to bring greater effectiveness, innovation, accountability and scale to address some of the world’s toughest challenges. The group presents in this report its key recommendations on some proposed joint initiatives to advance the impact investing market for the benefit of the world’s poor populations.

Impact Investment: The Invisible Heart of Markets

Posted By Administration, Saturday, August 15, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

The world is on the brink of a revolution in how we solve society’s toughest problems. The force driving this revolution is “impact investing”, which harnesses entrepreneurship, innovation and capital to power social progress. This report, Impact Investing: The Invisible Heart of Markets – Harnessing the power of entrepreneurship, innovation and capital for public good, examines what is needed to catalyse the growth of a global market for impact investment. It makes recommendations that can be implemented across Taskforce countries and beyond to deliver better social outcomes and improve millions of lives across the world.

The crash of 2008 highlighted the need for a renewed effort to ensure that finance helps build a healthy society rather than endanger it. This requires a paradigm shift in capital market thinking, from two-dimensions to three. By bringing a third dimension, impact, to the traditional capital market priorities of risk and return, impact investing has the potential to transform our ability to build a better society for all.
