Impact Report 2014: State of the Small and Growing Business Sector

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Thursday, March 17, 2016

This report focuses on the state of the global SGB sector, and also dives into regional trends. First, we provide an overview on intermediaries in 2014, including data on capacity development services, direct investments into SGBs, and donor funding. Next, we highlight trends and activities at ANDE’s five most established regional chapters: Brazil, Central America/Mexico, East Africa, India, and South Africa. We also expose current challenges for the sector to address, such as how to recruit and retain talent, improve entrepreneurial acceleration, and increase donor support to fulfill global development goals.

Since ANDE’s founding in 2009, we have seen much progress made by the SGB sector, composed of those organizations that support entrepreneurs in emerging markets. In 2014, more than 200 members were operating in more than 150 countries, and had collectively supported nearly 350,000 entrepreneurs.

Nonfinancial support has increased.
We have identified over 600 accelerator programs operating globally, including at least 200 based in emerging market countries. This model shows promise: preliminary research results show revenue and employee growth for accelerated enterprises was three times faster than growth for nonaccelerated enterprises.

The pace of investing has picked up.
We estimate that in the past five years, investment vehicles that do deals $2 million and below in emerging markets have raised $10 billion to invest in SGBs. The number of private equity deals below $2 million tripled in 2014 compared to 2010. And encouragingly, investors are increasingly willing to make earlier stage deals—lowering their median minimum target deal size in the past five years to $250,000.

But, there is still work to be done.
Despite the growing recognition that SGBs are a powerful mechanism to achieve economic and social change, investments from the international donor community have decreased to one percent of total development assistance.  We believe that if donors increase support directly to small and growing businesses, and more importantly invest in initiatives that strengthen the overall entrepreneurial ecosystem, they can have a catalytic effect on market-based approaches that will solve critical global challenges.

Education for the 22nd Century: How entrepreneurs can help bridge the education to employment divide

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, November 9, 2015

What are the gaps that keep young people from moving smoothly from education to employment? And how can education-focused entrepreneurs ease the transition?

Youth unemployment is a global problem, especially in developing and emerging markets. One of the reasons for this is the mismatch between employable skills and current approaches to education. Solutions are emerging to address the gap, but this is a complex problem that requires innovation in and coordination between the public and private sectors.

A few months ago, the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), with the support of SAP SE, set out to uncover how education-focused entrepreneurs are making a difference and the challenges they face along the way. A series of global roundtables on this subject helped shine a light on the amazing opportunities that exist for these entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs have an important role in helping bridge the gaps that keep young people from moving smoothly from education to employment. This report explores what this role is, and how to strengthen the opportunities for education-focused entrepreneurs. Whether you represent a corporation or foundation, or you're an education provider, investor, or part of an entrepreneurial support organization, there's something in this report for you.

Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Diagnostic Toolkit

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

This toolkit has been developed by the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), with the support of the UK Department for International Development (DFID). It provides methodological guidance on assessing the current state of entrepreneurial ecosystems and offers a set of resources and tools that can be used by development practitioners. This toolkit does not aim to be exhaustive, but is intended to serve as a basis for other organizations to build upon. To develop this toolkit, ANDE conducted a comprehensive review of publicly available literature on entrepreneurial ecosystems and identified nine evaluative frameworks. We assessed these frameworks and synthesized key elements and indicators. ANDE encourages practitioners to use this toolkit as a resource guide that can be adapted and modified to fit the local and/sectoral context.

Impact Inventing: Strengthening the Ecosystem for Invention-Based Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets

Posted By Alexander Pan, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

This report focuses on what differentiates an invention-based entrepreneur from traditional entrepreneurs and highlights what support invention-based entrepreneurs require, what resources are available, what ecosystem level gaps remain, and what tangible actions can be taken to fill these gaps. It is based primarily on a series of roundtable discussions held in Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Africa, and is supplemented by both one-on-one expert interviews and quantitative surveydata. Through this work we have identified five major ecosystem gaps that stymie the growth of inventionbased enterprises in emerging markets. These five gaps are: the Market Gap, the Finance Gap, the Talent Gap, the Policy Gap and the Physical Capital Gap.

Entrepreneurship and Acceleration Questions from the Field - Feb 2015

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

In this brief, we use data from the Entrepreneurship Acceleration Research Initiative in order to respond to the following question by Steve Cumming of the MasterCard Foundation about Youth Entrepreneurship

"At The MasterCard Foundation, we have a portfolio of youth entrepreneurship projects that we support in Sub Saharan Africa. We’re always looking for data to better understand the space and to inform our programming. I’m wondering if you could share any data by ages 18-24 and 25-30, and by African country or region if possible. Do you see anything interesting under these parameters?"

Mapping the Impact Investing Sector in Brazil

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

During the past 10 years of impact investing in Brazil, we have observed a significant development in the impact investing space. Five years ago, only a few players identified themselves as impact investors, very few organizations in the social sector were investor-ready, and there were almost no co-investment opportunities. A steep increase in the number of investors and amount of capital, greater coordination among players, and a more professional workforce active in the industry today have facilitated the development of impact investing. This market study of the impact investing sector in Brazil reveals significant market growth. Nineteen of Brazil’s largest impact investors, including fund managers, banks, foundations, family offices and others surveyed expect to commit 40% to 50% more capital to impact investments in 2014 compared to 2013.

Growth and Opportunity: The Landscape of Organizations that Support Small and Growing Businesses in the Developing World

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

Commissioned by the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) as part of its own strategic planning process, this study maps the landscape of the SGB sector, and in so doing, determines both the challenges facing SGB intermediaries and how ANDE and other organizations should support the field in addressing these challenges.

Impact Report 2013: State of the Small and Growing Business Sector

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

This report highlights the state of the SGB sector and also ANDE's vision for our future. You may notice differences from previous years' publications. This year, we have designed a report that we hope will be a reference for organizations who already are involved in the sector. Rather than making the case for SGBs, this report focuses on the progress and challenges that we have seen over the past five years. We draw on data provided by ANDE members and others over the past year to understand sector trends. We also leverage ANDE's proprietary research and the work of our member-led working groups and regional chapters to highlight important issues and milestones. The member initiatives that we describe represent just a small fraction of the exciting developments among ANDE members.
