Impact Inventing: Strengthening the Ecosystem for Invention-Based Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets

Posted By Alexander Pan, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

This report focuses on what differentiates an invention-based entrepreneur from traditional entrepreneurs and highlights what support invention-based entrepreneurs require, what resources are available, what ecosystem level gaps remain, and what tangible actions can be taken to fill these gaps. It is based primarily on a series of roundtable discussions held in Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Africa, and is supplemented by both one-on-one expert interviews and quantitative surveydata. Through this work we have identified five major ecosystem gaps that stymie the growth of inventionbased enterprises in emerging markets. These five gaps are: the Market Gap, the Finance Gap, the Talent Gap, the Policy Gap and the Physical Capital Gap.

Promise and Progress: Market-Based Solutions to Poverty in Africa

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, August 25, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

With the release of Promise and Progress, Monitor Group concludes a 16-month research project on the operations of 439 enterprises in nine sub-Saharan nations, enterprises which are active in 14 sectors and seek to use market mechanisms to improve the lives and livelihoods of people living at the bottom of the economic pyramid. These "market-based solutions" (MBSs) engage poor people as customers, offering them socially beneficial products at prices they can afford, or as business associates - suppliers, agents, or distributors - providing them with improved incomes. The report shows conclusively that MBSs make a significant difference in the fight against poverty by delivering social impact in a sustainable way, at scale.

Many Paths to a Home: Emerging Business Models for Latin America and the Caribbean's Base of the Pyramid

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, August 12, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, August 11, 2015

The lack of adequate housing is a problem throughout Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Almost 40 percent of families in the region live in a house beyond repair, have no title, or lack water, sewerage, electricity, adequate building materials, or space. It is estimated that by 2015, that number will increase by 10 percent. Only an investment of at least $310 billion will close the region's current housing gap, that is 7.8 percent of LAC's GDP. The demand for improved housing among the base of the pyramid (BOP) has been consistently strong and represents a relatively steady proportion of the overall income of this segment of the population. Yet the supply of innovative and tailored solutions continues to be limited. This report presents and analyzes promising business models that are enabling companies and other organizations to provide services and products to the BOP and in doing so help address the region's pressing housing deficit.

Beyond the Pioneer: Getting Inclusive Industries to Scale

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, August 11, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

This is Monitor Deloitte's report entitled Beyond the Pioneer: Getting Inclusive Industries to Scale, based on extensive research carried out by its Monitor Inclusive Markets unit based in Mumbai, India.

There has been increasing interest around the world in the role that inclusive businesses, which engage and benefit the global poor, can play in the fight against the problems of poverty. However, disappointingly few of these have achieved the scale required to make a significant difference to the global poor. An analysis of over 400 such firms in Africa showed that a mere 13% of them had begun to scale. This new report explains why this is the case, and provides recommendations for how these problems can be overcome

Learning from Leaders in a Fast-Growing Field: Results from the first Dalberg Survey of Social Enterprise - Dalberg Global Development Advisors

Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Friday, December 16, 2011
December 2011

Social enterprise, once a poorly understood cousin of charities and non-governmental organizations, has become a mainstream part of the business sector around the world. Its growth is a validation of two central principles: 1) that it is possible to do well by doing good, and 2) that financial sustainability is the key to maximizing the social benefit of an organization.

To help them on their way, this survey has collected both basic information and insights gained through experience from dozens of prominent social entrepreneurs. We placed particular emphasis on the factors underpinning their success and the challenges they currently faced, but we also encouraged them to proffer advice to social entrepreneurs entering the field for the first time. The questions were designed for brief and easy answers, but respondents were welcome to expand upon their answers and provide general commentary as well. A complete facsimile of the survey  is available online at http://dalberg.com/news under "Recent Publications.”
