New Perspectives on Financing Small Cap SME's in Emerging Markets

Posted By Administration, Thursday, June 2, 2016

New Perspectives on Financing Small Cap SME's in Emerging Markets:
The Case for Mezzanine Finance

by the Dutch Good Growth Fund (DGGF)/Investment funds local SME

In search for new models to provide risk capital, mezzanine finance, which blends elements from traditional Private Equity (PE) and debt financing into a unique product, provides an additional offer in the SME finance ecosystem for missing middle entrepreneurs.

As a relatively young and rather complex segment in the impact investing space, the commissioned study 'Publication of new perspectives on financing small cap SMEs in emerging markets: the case for mezzanine finance' provides an understanding of the specificities, diversity (and complexities) of it, critical to spur innovative thinking on both the fund managers and investors sides so products may be improved and models may be more scalable.

This study is the first of its kind and represents a first step into building small cap SME mezzanine finance as an asset class on its own.

Impact Inventing: Strengthening the Ecosystem for Invention-Based Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets

Posted By Alexander Pan, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

This report focuses on what differentiates an invention-based entrepreneur from traditional entrepreneurs and highlights what support invention-based entrepreneurs require, what resources are available, what ecosystem level gaps remain, and what tangible actions can be taken to fill these gaps. It is based primarily on a series of roundtable discussions held in Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Africa, and is supplemented by both one-on-one expert interviews and quantitative surveydata. Through this work we have identified five major ecosystem gaps that stymie the growth of inventionbased enterprises in emerging markets. These five gaps are: the Market Gap, the Finance Gap, the Talent Gap, the Policy Gap and the Physical Capital Gap.

Mapping the Impact Investing Sector in Brazil

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

During the past 10 years of impact investing in Brazil, we have observed a significant development in the impact investing space. Five years ago, only a few players identified themselves as impact investors, very few organizations in the social sector were investor-ready, and there were almost no co-investment opportunities. A steep increase in the number of investors and amount of capital, greater coordination among players, and a more professional workforce active in the industry today have facilitated the development of impact investing. This market study of the impact investing sector in Brazil reveals significant market growth. Nineteen of Brazil’s largest impact investors, including fund managers, banks, foundations, family offices and others surveyed expect to commit 40% to 50% more capital to impact investments in 2014 compared to 2013.

Growth Finance in Sub-Saharan Africa - Shell Fn

Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Thursday, December 15, 2011
August 2011

Growth finance, which provides capital to small and medium sized enterprises, is emerging as an important solution to the problem of the funding gap between private equity and microfinance, often referred to as the ‘missing middle’. Addressing this capital shortage, which is prevalent across the developing world and most pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa, will lead to more robust small and medium sized sectors with increased job creation and economic development. The critical issue for the success of growth finance lies in determining how to create the conditions for it to scale and prove its potential for widespread sustainability. Confronting the nascent nature of the growth finance market and the bias towards private equity norms is vital to creating these conditions. This Report offers 15 practical recommendations to stakeholders, drawn from a strategic market review of five specialist growth finance fund managers and associated investors and entrepreneurs
